New laptop software

============ Sponsor's Message ============

iCallSignal software eliminates long distance

phone charges for remote control, mobile users

Why pay your ISP by the month while you continue to

run up long distance bills by the minute? Why waste

time prearranging e-conferences, data transfers, and

telecommutes? Now thereâs iCallSignal, the software

that lets you CONNECT a distant, offline computer to

the Net, EXCHANGE info, then DISCONNECT it.

Itâs that simple. No advance plans. No long distance

costs.

Times says, "It takes the tools with which youâre

already comfortable and makes them work more cost-

effectively."

Info doesnât imply endorsement

There are a number of new products announced in this edition of I-Laptop Warrior. I include them in hopes that they are informative. I hope people realize, though, that just because I include something in the Moderatorâs Corner, or include a self-promotional post, doesnât mean that Iâm endorsing a product.

I believe in the free flow of information, but you have to be the final judge when it comes to purchasing decisions. I am almost always able to dig up a web site address so you can learn more about a product or service before making a buying decision. When I have tested something, I will make that explicit, together with my opinions. I like to try out every gizmo or new service that comes along, but never have the time to get to them all

Subject: Replies to questions asked on I-Laptop Warrior

I enjoy immensely your "I-Laptop Warrior" discussion list.

Please clarify for me the following:

Many questions are raised and published in the newsletter and private e-mail addresses given. The answers to most of these questions would interest me too, but I guess the answers go directly to the questioners' email address. Is it true?

Dominic

Moderatorâs Note:

Certainly there are some questions that go unanswered, but there are many, many more times when answers are sent only to the individual and not to the list as a whole. This is unfortunate, as it denies everyone else the opportunity to learn. So please, be generous with your replies, and send them to everyone via this discussion list. The Email address for sending posts to the list is found at the end of each and every edition of I-Laptop Warrior. Donât be bashful.

Subject: CoolMail gets better

Iâve posted info on I-Laptop Warrior previously about CoolMail (http://www.planetarymotion.com). For those of you who missed that issue, I won't repeat all the information here. Let's just say itâs a free, web-based email service (similar to HotMail, NetAddress or Rocketmail) that also allows you to listen to or reply to your email messages over the telephone. CoolMail even allows you to compose and send out new messages over the phone.

CoolMail has just added something new I thought Iâd mention. Every member now gets one hour of free access to CoolMail's continent-wide toll-free number every month.

From: "Joe Ashcraft" <skytalk@ptialaska.net>

Subject: An Email fix for cruise ship passengers

We are currently operating 2 internet stations primarily serving cruise ship passengers and crew personnel to check their Email and surf the web. Locations are in Ketchikan, Alaska and San Juan, Puerto Rico. We plan to open additional locations soon, including one in Skagway, Alaska, one in the Eastern Caribbean and possibly one on Cozumel, Mexico.

We offer computer terminals connected to the Internet, and we also provide pay phones and data ports for laptop users. We service many tourists and businesspeople with our laser printers, high speed connections, money transfer service, etc.

Our locations are very near the docks where there is major cruise ship activity.

I anyone would like more information about our services, call us at 907-247-9191 in Ketchikan or 787-289-0344 San Juan. Or you can Email us at: skytalk@ptialaska.net

Thanks.

Subject: Better way to play video games on your laptop

For all of you road warriors who would like to spend more time playing video games on your laptop while wasting time at airports, Gravis has just launched the first game pad designed specifically for laptops. Stinger uses a serial port connection, lets you play games designed for game pad or joystick, and can also be used as a pointing device via mouse emulation.

More information can be found at http://www.gravis.com.

Thanks!

Subject: External Notebook battery pack

Iâm not sure how many people have seen the Power Plant "universal" external battery pack for Notebooks yet, but I have been using one and I think it is great. The company has a web site at:

Moderatorâs Note:

I checked the companyâs web site. Hereâs the description given for this external battery:

"Less than an inch thick, the rechargeable Power Plant Notebook battery works in conjunction with your internal battery. The Notebook battery can be recharged over 500 times, and does not suffer from memory effect. A built in "fuel gauge" lets users see how much power is left. The battery connects to your Notebook computer with a universal cord (see our list of supported notebooks ) or an automobile cigarette lighter adapter cord."

The battery pack runs $170 when bought from the web site.

Subject: RV's and Computers...

My wife and I are RV enthusiasts and we are considering a full-time RV lifestyle but I won't go anywhere without my computer. I would like any information you may be able to provide on options for using computers in a mobile environment.

Thanks very much,

New laptop software

Some of you might be interested in learning more about software called Network/Unplugged. Itâs directed to mobile users, allowing them to select network resources they would like to have with them when off-line.

I donât work off of a networked, so itâs hard for me to judge exactly how useful this software may be. The basic concept, though, is that this software allows you to access network resources, such as shortcuts, mapped drives, and the network neighborhood, even when offline (such as when youâre traveling with your laptop).

Network/Unplugged enables two way synchronization as well, allowing the user to keep the virtual and actual

network in sync.

Network/Unplugged is available as a free 30-day download from the companyâs web site at http://www.mobiliti.com/html/try__it.htm

The software runs $39.95. The companyâs general web site is at: http://www.mobiliti.com.

Subject: Funny phones in Switzerland and France

Last two times I was in Europe, I came across phones that puzzled
me. One was in Switzerland, the other in France. The phones were
of a modern variety. They were wired in to the wall with Swiss and
French modular phone line plugs, as one would expect. But on the
other end of the phone line that ran from the wall, there was a
US-style RJ11 plug.

Oh, boy, I thought, this should be easy to go online. Since these
were residential lines I wasn't worried about digital service, so I
took the line out of the phone and plugged it directly into my
modem.

Nothing. It didn't work.

So I got out my line tester and checked out what I was dealing
with. In both cases, I found the polarity reversed on the lines.
I was surprised. Has anyone found similar circumstances and can
anyone offer an explanation? It was my understanding that the
general rule that a phone was a phone the world over still applied
(with the exception of digital PBX systems, of course).

My immediate solution was to pull out my alligator clips and put
the polarity back as it should be.
